Highway licences

Almost anything that happens on the public highway needs a licence of some sort under the many provisions of the Highways Act 1980. Be it placing tables and chairs, putting up an A-board or digging up the road, ISM can help navigate different approaches and requirements by different authorities.

While a scaffold or skip licence will normally be dealt with by the company providing them, there are other licences that might fall to you, the promoter, to apply for

Typically this includes:

  • materials
  • hoarding
  • mobile/elevated platforms
  • mobile cranes
  • crane oversail
  • structures over the highway
  • excavations (for instance to repair fence or wall footings - not for placing apparatus: see Section 50 licence)
  • planting (including on behalf of parish or town councils)
  • festive or floral decorations

In addition to your licence you then may need other approvals; traffic management plans, use of temporary traffic lights, road closures etc. ISM can help navigate all of these requirements and get your paperwork submitted and approved in good time for your deadlines.
